Snooker

Ron Slater…A true legend!
I just thought I would let the readers of our Club Magazine around the country, and our Wallasey members, know about our longest standing member Ron Slater, and some of the achievements he has gained representing our wonderful club in the Wallasey Snooker league.
Ron (although he doesn’t look it) celebrated his 91st birthday in March 2025, is a valued and popular member of our club, and is still presently playing league snooker to the highest level for our first team! He is liked and respected by the local league teams we play, and by his competitor’s admission, is still a match for anyone!
Ron first picked up a cue when he was 17 at the local YMCA club, and in 1952 aged 18 years of age, started playing league snooker for Rakers FC Social club.
Ron continued playing for a few clubs around Wallasey until he joined our club in 1970 and found his snooker home! He has played his league snooker for our club ever since.
Which means Ron has been playing competitive Wallasey league snooker for an incredible 73 years, the last 55 years for our club!
During this time, he has won the Wallasey Vets (over 55) championship 5 times, been the runner up once, has won our own club championship twice, as well as other various club competitions over the years!
When I asked Ron what his ambition was? He replied, “to still be playing league snooker when he’s 100”!
I wonder if anyone else can boast they have played league snooker for 73 years?

A massive thank you to everyone who helped me run the Fun Bowls Day on Sunday.
Firstly, Kelle, our stewardess, without her help the day just wouldn’t have happened! Our wonderful cleaners Dianne and Alex-lei who came in early at 8am with Kelle to get the club ready for the 10am start.
Andy and Suzanne for the amazing barbecue, even battling on through the rain to keep us fed!
Sylvia Costall for doing a great job running the raffle. Our wonderful bar staff Kelle, Amy, Debbie and Kate for keeping us refreshed.
A special mention to Les Henderson, Dave Garlick and Paul Bainbridge for helping with the draw and order of play! It was no easy task making sure the non bowlers were paired with a bowler and got a game!
everyone who turned up, thank you for your patience, we got there in the end!
Finally, congratulations to our finalists, Val Lyon’s paired with Eddie Rimmer, and Les Henderson paired with Mike Cunningham.
Les and Mike winning what was a closely fought and excellent final!!
